Social norms, formal laws, and traffic behavior

In a preliminary study by Vereeck and Deben (2003), a significant correlation was found between traffic fatalities and the rule of law in 13 countries. While their traffic regulations differ widely, this conclusion also held for the safest countries. In this project, the subsequent hypothesis that social norms are more important than formal laws is tested more thoroughly using a panel data regression model.
